Pass the eggs, please!

Hip, hip hooray! We got fantastic news today: eggs can now be a part of Caroline's diet! She passed the "egg challenge"!

She has been going through allergy testing the last few weeks, which has had several ups and downs. First, she had the skin test, which wasn't so pleasant. She had to sit still and not scratch her back for 15 or 20 minutes. No fun! That came back negative for both milk and eggs, which was encouraging. That same day, they did blood work to see if that was consistent with the skin tests. We were so thrilled to hear that "clinically" she is not allergic to milk or egg!

The testing didn't stop there. We had to go into the office for a "milk challenge" or "oral challenge" as they call it first. I went in there thinking it was just formality, and had high expectations that everything would be OK. Well, that just wasn't the case. The put only a small drop of milk on Caroline's tongue (which I honestly thought was not enough at first), and to my dismay, her lip started to swell within 5 minutes! I was so disappointed, that tears actually welled up in my eyes. This was a few days before her birthday, and I was thinking, "No ice cream sandwiches, no pizza at her birthday party!" The good news is, she has a good chance of outgrowing it within a few years, so we will try again with the testing in a year.

Today, we had the egg challenge and had much better luck! She actually liked the taste of the eggs and there were no signs of a reaction. I felt like the real "challenge" today was keeping her entertained in a tiny room for almost 4 hours! She did awesome and we are in the clear for eggs! Very encouraging!

The other good news is that now that she is 3 and shows no signs of being allergic to peanuts, she can have peanut butter starting out periodically in small doses! It's a whole new world for us! Below are a few pics of her eating her first pb and j sandwich and also a video clip which captured her eating it. It's fun to have firsts!

Peanut, peanut butter...

and jelly!
